Art Can Save China: Chinese Identity in Contemporary Art

Adhering to the theme of “Decolonizing the Arts," I chose to highlight the voices of Chinese contemporary artists who do not have the space for their creative voices to be heard in the 21st century by the Western audience in this project. My book and posters celebrate their work and explore their impact in the greater art world. The following spreads are selections from the 64-page book, accompanied by complementary posters.

The book maintains a minimal yet strong color palette of China-red, black, and white while utilizing a sturdy and contemporary sans serif font family to highlight the strength and power of the voices and artwork of Chinese contemporary artists. The cover features a powerful gunpowder artwork by Cai Guo Qiang, and topographical line patterns are seen throughout the book to emphasize the climate of the current art world.

Using identical fonts and graphic elements from the book, such as font, color, and linework, the posters are intended to be showcased outside the gallery space Eastern Projects, which is located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles’ Chinatown and houses artwork by artists from the East.
