In the film Moonlight, Chiron struggles with his identity growing up, not being sure whether he should be himself or take on a hypermasculine personality. He battles with choosing whether or not to show his soft personality as a kid on the playground (Act I). The most revealing scene was the intimate moment between Chiron and Kevin on the beach (Act II), but his sensitive side is covered up when he becomes an adult (Act III). However, his soft side is ultimately revealed when he meets Kevin again at the end.

Using colored plastic bags as a framing device, I visualize the turbulent stages of identity development that Chiron goes through in this title sequence design. Each of the three stages is represented by a different color: The first stage represents curiosity (yellow), the second stage represents struggle (red), and the final stage represents acceptance (blue). The colors gradually transition into each other in this order, while the wrinkles of the plastic bag reflect the turbulence in Chiron’s life, the middle stage being the most turbulent of all three.

Process

I strengthened my storytelling skills using colors and textures. My concept development, compositing, and photography skills also strengthened with this project.
